Word Meanings:

  • A-lā tattaqūn (أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ): "Will you not fear Allah?" or "Will you not be conscious of Him?" — an invitation to God-consciousness (taqwa) that entails guarding oneself against His punishment by obeying His commands and abstaining from what He has forbidden.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse takes us back to the moment when the Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) stood before the people of Aykah — the dwellers of the thickly wooded land — and addressed them with a profound and heartfelt call. The people of Aykah had rejected their Messenger, and in doing so, they had rejected all the Messengers before him, for the message of all prophets is one and the same: pure monotheism and submission to Allah alone.

Shu'ayb's opening words to them were simple yet powerful: "Will you not fear Allah?" With this gentle but firm question, he was not merely asking about their emotional state — he was inviting them to a complete transformation of their hearts and lives. He was calling them to abandon their polytheism, to leave behind their corrupt practices, and to stand in awe of their Creator who sees all that they do.

The question carries within it a profound wisdom: it appeals to their innate nature (fitrah), reminding them that deep within every soul lies the knowledge that there is a Creator to whom they owe worship and obedience. It awakens the conscience that every human being carries, urging them to reflect on their actions before the Day when all deeds will be brought to account.

Shu'ayb was not asking for any worldly reward for his guidance. His sole concern was their salvation — that they might attain righteousness and be guided to the straight path. His reward, as he would later affirm, was with the Lord of all the worlds alone.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse speaks to every one of us across time and place. The question that Shu'ayb posed to his people is the same question that echoes in the heart of every believer: Will we not fear Allah?

This is not a fear of terror or despair — it is a reverential awe that purifies the soul, restrains it from wrongdoing, and propels it toward goodness. It is the consciousness that Allah is always with us, always watching, always aware. When this awareness settles in the heart, it becomes the most powerful force for positive change in a person's life.

Imagine the peace that comes when you live your life knowing that your Creator is pleased with you. Imagine the strength you gain when you fear no one but Allah and hope in no one but Him. This is the essence of taqwa — and it is the key to success in this life and the next.

Let us, like Shu'ayb's noble call, turn to our Lord with sincere hearts. Let us ask ourselves: are we living lives that reflect our consciousness of Allah? Are we guarding our tongues, our eyes, our hands, and our hearts from what displeases Him?

The door of repentance is always open, and the mercy of Allah encompasses everything. So let us answer this divine call today, before it is too late, and let us strive to be among those who truly fear Allah and are conscious of Him in every moment of their lives.
