Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ḥanīf (حنيفًا): One who turns away from all false religions and deviates towards the true, upright faith — pure monotheism.
- Muslim (مسلمًا): One who submits wholly to Allah alone, in full obedience and surrender.
- Mushrikīn (المشركين): Those who associate partners with Allah in worship.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Exalted, here clears the noble Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) from the false claims made by both the People of the Book and the pagan Arabs. The Jews claimed he was a Jew, the Christians claimed he was a Christian, and the Arab polytheists claimed he followed their idolatrous ways. Allah refutes all these claims decisively.
Ibrahim was not a Jew, nor was he a Christian — for both Judaism and Christianity came into existence long after his time. Judaism as a distinct faith emerged with Prophet Musa (Moses), and Christianity with Prophet Isa (Jesus), both of whom lived centuries after Ibrahim. Rather, Ibrahim was a ḥanīf — one who turned away from all falsehood and deviation, inclining solely towards the straight path of pure monotheism. He was a muslim — completely submitted to his Lord, obedient to His commands, and devoted to His worship alone. And he was certainly not among those who associate partners with Allah.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the essence of Ibrahim's faith was not a label or a sectarian name, but a sincere, unwavering submission to the One True God. His religion was Islam in its purest form — the same message brought by all the prophets, culminating in the final message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Dear reader, reflect on this: Ibrahim, the beloved friend of Allah (Khalilullah), was neither a Jew nor a Christian, nor a polytheist. He was a pure monotheist who submitted entirely to his Creator. This is the very essence of Islam — to worship Allah alone, without any partner, and to surrender one's entire being to His will. This is the path of all the prophets, and it is the path that leads to true success and eternal happiness. Embrace this pure faith, and follow in the footsteps of Ibrahim, for Allah has promised His guidance and mercy to those who sincerely submit to Him.
