Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • لَوَلَّوُا الْأَدْبَارَ (lawallaw al-adbār): They would have turned their backs, meaning they would have fled in retreat and defeat.
  • وَلِيًّا (waliyyan): A protector or ally who would take charge of their affairs and defend them.
  • نَصِيرًا (naṣīran): A helper or supporter who would come to their aid in battle.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O believers, if those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger had actually engaged you in battle — whether at Hudaybiyyah, in Makkah, or at any other place — they would have been utterly routed. They would have turned their backs and fled in panic, just as a defeated army retreats in disarray, unable to stand their ground against the strength and courage that Allah has granted you. And after that humiliating flight, they would find no protector to shield them from your pursuit, nor any helper to come to their rescue and turn the tide of battle in their favor. This is a divine promise from Allah, the Almighty, who knows the outcome of all matters before they occur.

This verse is a powerful reassurance to the believers that their victory is not dependent on their own numbers or weapons, but on Allah's support and decree. When Allah promises protection and triumph, no force on earth can stand against His will. The disbelievers, despite all their scheming and preparations, are ultimately weak and helpless before the power of their Creator. Their apparent strength is an illusion; their alliances are fragile; their helpers will abandon them at the critical moment.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse instills profound confidence in the heart of every believer. It teaches us that true strength lies not in material might, but in faith and reliance upon Allah. When you walk the path of righteousness and uphold the truth, Allah Himself becomes your Protector and your Helper. No enemy, no matter how powerful or numerous, can overcome you when Allah is on your side. So hold firm to your faith, trust in your Lord, and never fear the threats of the disbelievers — for their end is defeat, and your end is victory, in this life and in the Hereafter. Let this promise fill your heart with peace and courage, and let it draw you closer to the One who never breaks His word.

📜 Verse 20-24 — Al-Fath

Allah has promised you much booty that you will take [in the future] and has hastened for you this [victory] and withheld the hands of people from you - that it may be a sign for the believers and [that] He may guide you to a straight path.
And [He promises] other [victories] that you were [so far] unable to [realize] which Allah has already encompassed. And ever is Allah, over all things, competent.
And if those [Makkans] who disbelieve had fought you, they would have turned their backs [in flight]. Then they would not find a protector or a helper.
[This is] the established way of Allah which has occurred before. And never will you find in the way of Allah any change.
And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them within [the area of] Makkah after He caused you to overcome them. And ever is Allah of what you do, Seeing.
