Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Siraj (سِرَاجًا): A lamp or a source of light that illuminates its surroundings.
- Wahhaj (وَهَّاجًا): Extremely radiant, intensely luminous, and generating great heat.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah draws our attention to one of His magnificent signs in the universe: the sun. He says, "And We made [the sun] a blazing, shining lamp." The sun is described as a *siraj wahhaj* — a lamp that combines both intense light and penetrating heat. Just as a lamp dispels darkness and brings warmth and visibility to a home, the sun illuminates the entire world, sustains life through its heat, and drives the cycles of nature. It is not merely a source of light, but a source of energy that powers photosynthesis, drives weather patterns, and makes life on Earth possible. This description emphasizes both the physical reality of the sun — its fiery nature and brilliant glow — and its role as a divine blessing. Allah placed this celestial body in perfect balance, neither too close to burn us nor too far to leave us in freezing darkness, and He made it follow a precise orbit. This is a sign of His infinite wisdom, power, and mercy.
Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: who hung this blazing lamp in the sky without any pillars, and who set it on its course with such precision that it never deviates, even by a second? The sun rises every morning, without fail, serving you and me — warming our days, growing our food, and lighting our paths. This is not a random accident; it is the deliberate act of a Loving Creator who cares for His creation. When you feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, remember that the One who made it is the same One who sent you the Quran as a guide. He who manages the sun and the moon and the stars is more than capable of managing your affairs, answering your prayers, and forgiving your sins. So turn to Him with a grateful heart, and let this magnificent sign draw you closer to the One who created it all. Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day are signs for those of understanding — and this blazing lamp is but one of them. Will you not then reflect and give thanks?
