Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- إِلَّا مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ — Except what Allah wills (i.e., whatever Allah wills for you to forget or omit from your recitation, by His wisdom and decree).
- الْجَهْرَ — That which is open and apparent, whether in speech or action.
- مَا يَخْفَىٰ — That which is hidden and concealed, whether in the heart or in secret deeds.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with a profound reassurance and a divine promise. After commanding him to recite and remember the Qur'an, Allah clarifies that He will make the Prophet ﷺ retain the Qur'an in his heart with unwavering precision, so that he will not forget it — except what Allah wills for him to forget, and this exception is not a flaw but a deliberate act of divine wisdom. Sometimes, Allah, in His infinite knowledge and mercy, would cause the Prophet ﷺ to forget a portion of revelation for a specific purpose — such as abrogation (naskh), where a ruling or verse is superseded by a later one for the benefit of the community and the progression of Islamic law. This forgetting was never a loss; rather, it was part of Allah's perfect plan, ensuring that the final divine message was revealed in stages, tailored to the needs of the growing Muslim nation.
Then Allah says: "Indeed, He knows the open and what is hidden." This is a powerful reminder that nothing escapes Allah's knowledge — not the words spoken aloud, not the silent thoughts in the heart, not the deeds done in public, nor those done in the darkest secrecy. Allah's knowledge is absolute and all-encompassing. He knows the Prophet's ﷺ sincerity in conveying the message, the struggles he faced, and the hidden efforts of every soul. This verse instills in the believer a profound sense of accountability and comfort: if Allah knows everything, then He knows your intentions, your struggles, and your secret acts of worship. Nothing is wasted with Him.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a beautiful lesson for every Muslim. When you read the Qur'an and strive to memorize it, know that Allah is the One who preserves it in your heart — and if you forget something, it is only by His will, and He will bring it back to you when you need it, or He has a greater wisdom behind it. Do not despair over forgetfulness; instead, trust in Allah's plan. Moreover, the verse reminds you that Allah sees and knows everything about you — your public worship and your private devotion. So, let your secret deeds be as pure as your public ones, for Allah knows them all. And if you ever feel alone in your struggles, remember: the One who knows the hidden knows your pain, your effort, and your sincerity. Turn to Him with a humble heart, and He will never let your good deeds go to waste. This is the beauty of Islam — a direct connection with a Lord who knows every detail of your life and rewards you accordingly.
