Word Meanings:
- أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ – "Did we not forbid you?" – a rhetorical question expressing rebuke and disapproval.
- عَنِ الْعَالَمِينَ – "from the worlds" – meaning, from hosting or protecting any of the people (i.e., the guests who passed by).
Explanation of the Verse:
The people of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) addressed him with harshness and arrogance, saying: "Did we not forbid you from entertaining or protecting any of the people who come to you as guests?" They were referring to their evil practice of intercepting travelers who passed through their town, intending to commit immoral acts against them. Lot, however, would stand in their way, defend the guests, and host them in his home to keep them safe from the wickedness of his people. The people's words carried a tone of threat and anger, as if they were reminding him of a "rule" they had imposed upon him—that he must not shelter anyone from among the people. Their question was not a genuine inquiry but a stern reproach, revealing their deep corruption and their insistence on persisting in their vile behavior.
Reflection and Lesson:
This verse highlights the stark contrast between the righteous character of Prophet Lot—who embodied hospitality, honor, and the protection of the vulnerable—and the corrupt nature of his people, who had inverted all moral values. They considered good deeds as crimes and evil acts as their right. This teaches us the importance of standing firm for what is right, even when the majority around us oppose it. It also reminds us of the value of hospitality in Islam, which is a beloved Sunnah and a sign of faith. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honor his guest." (Al-Bukhari and Muslim). Let us strive to be people who protect the weak, honor guests, and uphold noble character, trusting that Allah is with those who do good—just as He was with His Prophet Lot, granting him victory and salvation from the punishment that befell the wrongdoers.
