Word Meanings:

  • "Wa-ttaqū Allāh": Fear Allah, be mindful of Him, and uphold His commands by avoiding what He has forbidden.
  • "Wa lā tukhzūn": Do not disgrace me, do not humiliate me, or bring shame upon me.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, the Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) addresses his people who had come with evil intentions toward his guests—honorable angels sent by Allah in the form of handsome young men. Lot, having recognized the wickedness of his people's desires, pleads with them, saying: "Fear Allah and do not disgrace me."

He reminds them that these guests are under his protection and hospitality, and that harming them would bring humiliation and shame upon him in front of his own people. The act they intended was not only a grave sin—a violation of natural law and divine command—but also a direct assault on the sacred duty of honoring one's guests, a value deeply cherished in all noble traditions.

Lot's words carry a dual appeal: first, a call to God-consciousness (taqwā), urging them to remember that Allah sees all and will hold them accountable; second, a call to preserve his honor and dignity, for a host who fails to protect his guests is considered disgraced in any honorable society.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse teaches us the profound importance of protecting the vulnerable and honoring those who seek our care. It reminds us that true faith is not merely a matter of ritual, but of moral conduct—restraining oneself from sin, respecting the sanctity of others, and upholding justice even when desires tempt us otherwise.

The story of Lot is a timeless lesson: when a society abandons moral boundaries and natural order, it invites divine punishment. But for those who heed the call of the prophets, who choose righteousness over lust, and who place Allah's pleasure above their own whims, there is mercy, safety, and ultimate success.

Let us take this message to heart: every believer is a host to their guests, a protector of the weak, and a guardian of their own honor through obedience to Allah. By fearing Allah in all our actions, we safeguard our dignity in this life and secure our standing in the Hereafter. May Allah guide us to follow the example of His noble prophets and protect us from all that brings shame and ruin.
