Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- لَعَمْرُكَ (La-'Amruka): By your life, O Muhammad — an oath sworn by Allah upon the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
- سَكْرَتِهِمْ (Sakratihim): Their intoxication — here referring to their deep immersion in misguidance, heedlessness, and the overwhelming desire of their lusts.
- يَعْمَهُونَ (Ya'mahūn): They wander blindly and confusedly, going back and forth in their error without clarity or guidance.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Exalted, swears an oath by the very life of His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — a unique honor granted to no other prophet or creation. This divine oath highlights the immense status and nobility of the Prophet in the sight of his Lord. The verse then declares that the people of Prophet Lot (Lut) were deeply sunk in their state of intoxication — not the intoxication of wine, but the intoxication of their overwhelming lusts and desires. They were wandering blindly in their transgression, confused and stubborn, refusing to heed the warnings of their prophet. They persisted in their heedlessness until the punishment of Allah descended upon them at sunrise, destroying them utterly.
Reflection and Da'wah:
This verse carries profound lessons for every believer. First, it shows the unparalleled honour of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — Allah Himself swore by his life, a distinction that fills our hearts with love and reverence for him. Second, it warns us against the "intoxication" of worldly desires and sins, which can blind the heart and mind until a person wanders aimlessly in error. Just as the people of Lot were destroyed for their stubborn persistence in sin, we must take heed and turn back to Allah before it is too late. The door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy is vast — but we must not delay, for none of us knows when the final hour will come. Let this verse inspire us to purify our hearts, control our desires, and follow the straight path with clarity and sincerity, so that we may earn the love of Allah and His Messenger in this life and the next.
