Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Fa mā aghnā" — "So availed them not" or "did not benefit them."
- "Mā kānū yaksibūn" — "What they used to earn" — referring to their wealth, possessions, strength, fortifications, and worldly achievements.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse concludes the story of the people of Thamud, who were given immense blessings by Allah — they carved homes out of mountains, possessed great wealth, and enjoyed power and influence. Yet, when they rejected the message of Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) and persisted in their arrogance and disbelief, the promised punishment descended upon them at dawn — a mighty blast that seized them all.
Here, Allah declares that all that they had accumulated — their riches, their strong fortresses, their numbers, their skills, and their social standing — was of no avail whatsoever. None of it could shield them from the decree of Allah or repel even a moment of His chastisement. Their wealth could not buy their safety; their fortified dwellings could not protect them; their strength could not resist the divine command.
This is a profound lesson for humanity: no matter how much we amass in this world — money, status, technology, or military might — none of it can protect us from the consequences of turning away from our Creator. True security lies not in what we possess, but in our relationship with Allah through faith, obedience, and righteousness.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. The people of Thamud were among the most advanced civilizations of their time, yet their achievements became worthless in the face of divine justice. Today, we see nations and individuals placing their trust in material progress, scientific advancement, and worldly power — forgetting that the One who created all of this holds absolute authority over it.
Islam invites you to a life of balance: enjoy the blessings of this world, but never let them distract you from your ultimate purpose. The Qur'an repeatedly reminds us that this life is temporary, and what truly matters is how we live it in obedience to Allah. When you align your heart with your Creator, you gain a protection that no fortress can provide and a peace that no wealth can purchase.
Do not wait until the punishment comes — as it did for those before us — to realize that nothing we "earn" can save us. Turn to Allah today, seek His mercy, and build your life on the solid foundation of faith. That is the only investment that will truly benefit you in this world and the next.
