Surah Al-Hijr — Verse 97

In this profound verse, Allah addresses His beloved Messenger (peace be upon him) with words of immense comfort and reassurance. Allah says: "And We certainly know that your heart is distressed by what they say."

Here, the Almighty acknowledges the deep emotional pain and sorrow that the Prophet (peace be upon him) experienced when the polytheists mocked him, rejected his call to monotheism, and hurled accusations at him—calling him a madman, a poet, or a sorcerer. They ridiculed the message of the Qur'an and scorned the believers. This constant barrage of hostility and mockery naturally weighed heavily on his noble heart, for he was a human being with profound compassion for his people and a burning desire for their guidance.

Allah, in His infinite mercy and knowledge, does not merely say "We know"—He emphasizes it with the particle of affirmation (*la-qad*), making it a solemn and certain declaration. This is a divine acknowledgment that the Prophet's feelings are seen, understood, and validated. Nothing escapes Allah's awareness—not a single word they utter, nor the pain it causes in the Prophet's chest.

The verse also subtly teaches us that even the greatest of Allah's creation experienced emotional hardship when faced with rejection and ridicule. This is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of deep humanity and sincere concern for others. The Prophet's distress was not for his own sake, but because of the people's stubbornness against the truth that would save them from destruction.

This divine statement serves as a powerful lesson in patience and trust in Allah. When you face mockery, rejection, or harsh words for the sake of truth, know that Allah is fully aware of your struggle. Your pain is not unnoticed. The One who created the heavens and the earth sees your tears, feels your heartache, and is with you in your trial.

Moreover, this verse sets the stage for the ultimate remedy that follows in the next verse: the prescription of glorifying and praising Allah as the cure for a constricted heart. It reminds us that when people's words hurt us, we should turn to our Lord, for His remembrance brings tranquility to the hearts.

Dear believer, take comfort in this verse. Your Lord knows every moment of your struggle when you strive to spread goodness and are met with ridicule. He knows the sleepless nights and the heavy sighs. Just as He comforted His Prophet, He comforts you with the promise that He is with you, that your efforts are seen, and that your reward is with Him. Do not let the words of those who mock the truth break your spirit. Instead, lift your heart to Allah, for He is the One who turns distress into relief and sorrow into joy. The path of truth has always been paved with trials, but the One who calls you to it is the Most Merciful, the Most Knowing.
