Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Akhūhum (أَخُوهُمْ): Their brother — meaning their brother in lineage and kinship, not in religion, as Prophet Lot (Lut) was from the same tribal lineage as his people.
  • Alā tattaqūn (أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ): Will you not fear Allah and be conscious of Him? Will you not guard yourselves against His punishment by abandoning sin and disbelief?

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Exalted, recounts the story of His Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) and his call to his people. When Lot was sent as a messenger to his community, he addressed them with a gentle yet profound question: "Will you not fear Allah?" — meaning, will you not be mindful of His commands, avoid His prohibitions, and fear His reckoning?

This rhetorical question was a powerful call to their hearts and minds. It was not a harsh rebuke, but rather an invitation to reflect — a reminder that Allah sees all, knows all, and that every soul will stand before Him. Lot was their brother by blood, a man they knew well for his truthfulness and integrity, which made his call even more compelling. He was not a stranger bringing an alien message; he was one of them, known for his honesty, and he came with a clear and urgent warning.

The verse highlights the essence of Lot's message: the call to *taqwa* (God-consciousness) — the foundation of all Islamic teachings. Before addressing the specific sins of his people, he first called them to the root of all reform: a sincere awareness of Allah. This is a timeless lesson for every believer: that true change begins with the heart, with a living, breathing consciousness of Allah in every action and thought.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This beautiful opening of Prophet Lot's call teaches us the wisdom of gentle invitation. He did not begin with condemnation, but with a question that stirs the soul: "Will you not fear Allah?" It is a question that every human being, in their quiet moments, must ask themselves. It is an invitation to wake up from heedlessness, to return to the Creator, and to realize that this worldly life is but a fleeting moment compared to the eternal Hereafter.

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. Ask yourself: Am I conscious of Allah in my daily life? Do I fear His displeasure and long for His pleasure? The door of repentance is always open, and the mercy of Allah is vaster than all of creation. Let the call of Lot echo in your heart today — and respond with a heart that turns to Allah, seeking His forgiveness and His guidance. For indeed, success lies in taqwa, and the best provision for the journey to the Hereafter is righteousness.
