Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَوَكَّلْ (Tawakkul): To rely upon, entrust one's affairs to, and place complete confidence in someone, while taking the necessary means.
- الْعَزِيزِ (Al-ʿAzīz): The All-Mighty, the Invincible, the One who cannot be overcome or defeated.
- الرَّحِيمِ (Ar-Raḥīm): The Most Merciful, the One who showers His compassion and kindness upon His creation, especially upon His righteous servants.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)—and by extension, every believer—to place complete trust in Him alone. The command is to entrust all affairs, both great and small, to Allah, who is described with two magnificent attributes:
First, Al-ʿAzīz (the All-Mighty): He is the One whose power knows no limits, whose might cannot be challenged, and whose decree cannot be overturned. No enemy, no matter how strong or cunning, can prevail against those who seek refuge in Him. When you place your trust in the All-Mighty, you are anchored to an unshakable fortress.
Second, Ar-Raḥīm (the Most Merciful): He is the One who does not abandon His faithful servants. His mercy encompasses those who turn to Him in repentance and obedience. He is gentle with His allies, protects them from harm, and guides them through every trial. His mercy is not distant or abstract—it is active, caring, and ever-present.
The context of this verse is significant. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was facing the hostility and mockery of the disbelievers in Makkah. Allah reassured him: do not be distressed by their plots or their rejection. Instead, rely upon the One who is mighty enough to crush all opposition and merciful enough to never forsake you. This same reassurance extends to every believer who faces opposition, hardship, or uncertainty—your trust should never be in your own strength, nor in the support of others, but in Allah alone.
Moreover, the verse carries a beautiful reminder of Allah's intimate awareness of His servants. He sees you when you stand in prayer alone in the depths of the night, and He sees you when you move among the worshippers in congregation—bowing, prostrating, and sitting. He hears your recitation and knows your intentions. This awareness is itself a source of comfort: the One in whom you trust is not distant or unaware; He is fully acquainted with your struggles, your devotion, and your needs.
A Call to the Reader:
Dear believer, reflect on the beauty of this command. Allah does not ask you to face life's challenges alone. He invites you to lean upon Him—the Mighty who cannot be defeated, the Merciful who never disappoints. When your heart is heavy, when enemies surround you, when the road ahead seems dark, remember: your trust in Allah is not a sign of weakness, but a source of infinite strength. The One who created the heavens and the earth, who controls every outcome, who knows your every thought—He is your protector. So surrender your worries to Him, and you will find a peace that no worldly power can provide. This is the essence of Islam: a life lived in loving reliance upon the Almighty, the Most Merciful.
