Word Meanings:
- حِبَالَهُمْ (their ropes): Thick, twisted cords used for tying or binding.
- عِصِيَّهُمْ (their staffs): Long wooden sticks or rods.
- بِعِزَّةِ فِرْعَوْنَ (by the might of Pharaoh): They swore an oath by Pharaoh’s power, honor, and authority.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the appointed day arrived, the sorcerers of Egypt stood before Pharaoh and the gathered crowd, ready to face Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him). They threw down their ropes and staffs, and by the power of their illusion, those objects appeared to the onlookers as slithering, moving serpents. The people were amazed and terrified by what they saw.
At that very moment, the sorcerers—filled with arrogance and overconfidence—swore an oath by the honor and might of Pharaoh, declaring: "Indeed, we are surely the victors!" They believed their magic was unmatched, and they felt certain that Musa would be defeated before the eyes of the entire nation. Their words were not merely a statement of hope; they were a boastful challenge, rooted in their pride and their reliance on Pharaoh’s worldly power.
This scene reveals a profound truth: the sorcerers placed their complete trust in the strength of a tyrant and the skill of their own craft. They did not know that the power of Allah, the Creator of all things, far surpasses any human trickery or illusion. Their confidence was built on sand, while Musa’s strength came from the Lord of the heavens and the earth.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this moment carefully. How often do we, like those sorcerers, place our trust in worldly might—wealth, status, or human alliances—only to find that these things vanish like illusions when the truth of Allah manifests? The sorcerers swore by Pharaoh’s glory, but within moments, their ropes and staffs were swallowed by Musa’s staff, and they fell down in prostration to the Lord of the worlds.
This verse teaches us a timeless lesson: true victory belongs only to those who rely on Allah, not on the fleeting power of creation. When you face challenges in your life, remember that no matter how strong the opposition may seem, Allah’s support for His sincere servants is far greater. Let your confidence be in Him alone, for He never abandons those who turn to Him with pure hearts. And when you see the arrogance of the mighty, do not despair—for their end is humiliation, while the believers’ end is honor, both in this world and the Hereafter.
