Word Meanings:

  • Shiridhimah (شِرْذِمَةٌ): A small, contemptible group or a scattered band of people, often used to belittle their number and status.
  • Qalilun (قَلِيلُونَ): Few in number, insignificant in count.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah narrates the words of Pharaoh as he reacted to the news of the Children of Israel leaving Egypt with Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him). Pharaoh, in his arrogance and pride, dismissed the fleeing believers by saying: "Indeed, these are but a small, contemptible group." He sought to belittle them in the eyes of his people and army, undermining their significance and reducing their escape to a trivial matter. His aim was to boost the morale of his own forces and to portray the believers as weak and unworthy of concern, while simultaneously hiding his own inner fear and rage at their departure.

This statement reflects the classic attitude of tyrants who underestimate the power of faith and the will of the righteous. Pharaoh thought that numbers and worldly might were the true measures of strength, but he failed to realize that the believers, though few, carried with them the protection and support of Allah. Their small number was not a sign of weakness, but rather a testament to their sincerity and reliance on their Lord.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: never be deceived by the smallness of your numbers or the apparent weakness of your position. The history of Islam is filled with examples where small, faithful groups overcame mighty empires—not by their own strength, but by the help of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions were few in the early days of Islam, yet they changed the course of human history. So, if you find yourself among the few who uphold the truth, do not be disheartened. Allah's promise of victory is with the patient and the sincere. The tyrants of this world may mock and belittle, but the final triumph belongs to the righteous, for Allah is with those who fear Him and do good. Let this verse inspire you to stand firm, for the scales of honor are not weighed by numbers, but by faith and steadfastness.

And We inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued."
Then Pharaoh sent among the cities gatherers
[And said], "Indeed, those are but a small band,
And indeed, they are enraging us,
And indeed, we are a cautious society... "
