Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tanḥitūn (تَنْحِتُونَ): You carve, shape, or sculpt with your own hands — specifically referring to carving stones or wood into idols and statues.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) confronted his people with unwavering firmness and profound logic. He addressed them with a question that exposed the absurdity of their worship: "Do you worship what you yourselves carve?"

He was not merely asking an informational question — he was rebuking them and shaking the very foundations of their misguided beliefs. Ibrahim pointed out the undeniable contradiction in their actions: they shaped lifeless stones with their own hands, gave them forms and figures, and then bowed down before these very creations as objects of worship. They attributed divinity to the work of their own craftsmanship, while turning away from the true Creator — the One who created them and gave them the ability to carve, shape, and work with their hands.

The question carries a deep, timeless lesson: How can a created being worship the creation of its own hands? How can the servant bow to what he himself has made, while ignoring the Lord who made him? The One who deserves worship is the Creator of all things — not the created, not the carved, not the sculpted.

This verse teaches us a beautiful and essential truth: our worship must be directed solely to Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the One who gives life and death, the One who sustains us and provides for us. No matter how impressive human craftsmanship may be, it can never rival the majesty of the Creator. The idols of the past were carved from stone — but today, we must ask ourselves: do we ever "carve" our own idols? Do we elevate wealth, status, desires, or worldly pleasures to a place in our hearts that belongs only to Allah?

The message of Ibrahim is timeless: free your heart from every false object of devotion, and direct your worship, your love, your hope, and your fear to Allah alone. He is the only One worthy of your submission, and He is the One who created you, guides you, and will judge you with perfect justice and mercy. Let this beautiful question of Ibrahim inspire you to purify your faith and live a life of sincere devotion to the One True God.
