Word Meanings:

  • Al-Mala' (الْمَلَأُ): The chiefs, nobles, and prominent leaders of a community whose opinions carried weight.
  • 'Aleem (عَلِيمٌ): One who is deeply knowledgeable and highly skilled in a particular field—here, referring to mastery in sorcery.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) stood before Pharaoh and his court, Allah granted him two mighty miracles: his staff transformed into a living serpent, and his hand shone radiant white without any ailment. Witnessing these undeniable signs, the chiefs and elite of Pharaoh's people—those who held influence and authority—did not respond with reflection or faith. Instead, they dismissed the miracles as mere trickery, saying: "Indeed, this man is a skilled sorcerer." They claimed that Musa was so adept in the art of illusion that he could deceive the eyes of the beholders, making a stick appear as a snake and altering perceptions of reality. Their words were not born of ignorance but of arrogance and denial, for they recognized the extraordinary nature of what they saw, yet they chose to label it as sorcery to undermine his message and rally the people against him.

This reaction reveals a profound truth: when the truth confronts those who are attached to power and falsehood, they often resort to labeling it with familiar accusations rather than admitting its divine origin. The chiefs feared that if the people believed Musa, their own authority and status would crumble. So they planted doubt, calling him a "learned sorcerer"—a phrase meant to warn the masses that Musa was dangerously clever and could sway hearts with his craft.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this scene: the miracles of Musa were clear, visible, and undeniable, yet the arrogant hearts refused to submit. How often do we, too, witness the signs of Allah in our lives—the precision of creation, the answers to our prayers, the guidance of the Qur'an—and still turn away, making excuses to avoid submission? The chiefs of Pharaoh teach us a cautionary lesson: do not let pride or worldly interests blind you to the truth. When Allah's signs reach you, respond with humility and faith, for the heart that surrenders to its Creator finds peace, while the heart that denies Him remains restless. Let the story of Musa inspire you to seek truth sincerely, for Allah guides those who are sincere in their search. And remember, no sorcery or illusion can ever stand against the light of divine truth—so hold firm to the Qur'an, and let it illuminate your path.
