Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ghuthā’ (غُثَاءً): Dry, withered remnants of plants — the chaff and debris that becomes scattered and brittle after vegetation has dried up.
  • Aḥwā (أَحْوَىٰ): Blackened or dark in color, referring to the state of decayed, old vegetation that has turned dark after rotting.

Explanation of the Verse:

After mentioning that Allah, the Most High, brings forth green, lush pasture from the earth, this verse completes the picture: "Then He makes it dry, dark debris."

This is a profound display of Allah’s absolute power and wisdom. The same earth that once produced vibrant, fresh greenery — a source of life and nourishment for all creatures — is then transformed by His command into withered, blackened remnants. The cycle of life and decay is entirely in His hands. He alone gives life, and He alone causes decline. This is not a random process but a deliberate sign for those who reflect: just as the green pasture withers and turns to dark chaff, so too does this worldly life pass away, and so too will every soul return to its Creator. The One who can transform lush greenery into dry debris with such ease is certainly capable of bringing the dead back to life on the Day of Resurrection.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, look around you at the changing seasons — the fresh green fields that turn to dry straw, the gardens that bloom and then fade. Every single one of these transformations is a living lesson from your Lord. He is the One who created, perfected, and then caused decline — all to remind you that nothing in this world is permanent. Your youth, your strength, your wealth — all will fade like that green pasture. But there is something that never fades: your relationship with Allah. When you recognize His power in the simplest signs — like the grass beneath your feet — your heart fills with awe and gratitude. This is the path to true success: to see your Lord in every detail of creation, to humble yourself before His majesty, and to prepare for the eternal life that awaits you. The same Allah who turns green pastures to dry chaff will also raise you from your grave — so turn to Him now, before your own season passes, and let this sign awaken your heart to the beauty of faith.

3وَالَّذِي قَدَّرَ فَهَدَىٰ
And who destined and [then] guided
4وَالَّذِي أَخْرَجَ الْمَرْعَىٰ
And who brings out the pasture
5فَجَعَلَهُ غُثَاءً أَحْوَىٰ
