Key Words and Phrases:
- "Tantahi" (تنتـه): To desist, cease, or stop from something.
- "Al-Marjūmīn" (المرجومين): Those who are stoned to death, or pelted with stones until death.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, the people of Prophet Nuh (Noah), peace be upon him, reached the final stage of their stubbornness and arrogance. After all their debates, mockery, and rejection of his message, they abandoned dialogue altogether and resorted to outright threats. They said to him: "O Nuh, if you do not stop calling us to your faith and leave us with our gods and our ways, then you will surely be among those who are stoned to death." This was not an empty threat—it was a declaration of their intent to kill him by pelting him with stones, a brutal and public form of execution meant to silence him permanently.
This was the ultimate test of Nuh's patience and resolve. After centuries of calling his people to the worship of Allah alone, he was now faced with a direct threat to his life. Yet, as we see in the following verses, his response was not one of fear or retreat, but of profound reliance on Allah and continued perseverance in his mission.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a powerful lesson about the nature of truth and falsehood. When falsehood runs out of arguments, it resorts to force and intimidation. The enemies of truth throughout history have always tried to silence the callers to righteousness through threats, persecution, and violence. But the believer's response must always be one of steadfastness and trust in Allah. Nuh's people thought that threatening him with death would make him abandon his mission—but they failed to realize that a true believer fears no one but Allah. When you are upon the truth, no threat, no hardship, and no opposition should move you from your path. Allah is with those who are patient, and He never abandons His sincere servants. So stand firm, speak the truth with wisdom and courage, and leave the outcome to the One who controls all affairs. The victory of truth is inevitable, even if it comes after centuries of patience.
