Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَرْجِعُونَهَا — "You bring it back": meaning, you return the soul to the body after it has reached the throat at the moment of death.
- إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ — "If you are truthful": referring to their claim that they are not accountable and will not be resurrected or recompensed for their deeds.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses those who deny the Resurrection and the Day of Recompense, challenging them at the very moment of death. When a person's soul reaches their throat—at the final breath, when life is slipping away and the eyes glaze over—Allah poses a profound challenge: *"Why do you not bring the soul back?"* If you truly believe that you are not under Allah's authority, that you will not be held accountable, and that there is no life after death, then prove your claim. Return the soul to the dying body. Restore life to the one whose breath has ceased. But you cannot—and you know it.
This is an undeniable proof of Allah's absolute power and your complete helplessness. You cannot delay death by a single moment, nor can you retrieve a soul once it departs. So how can you claim that the One who takes the soul at death cannot bring it back for the Resurrection? The very power that extracts the soul is the same power that will restore it on the Day of Judgment.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause at this scene. Every soul that has ever lived—from the first human to the last—will taste this moment. The soul will climb to the throat, and no doctor, no wealth, no family, no power on earth will be able to hold it back. This is the moment when all illusions of self-sufficiency shatter. This is the moment when every person realizes, with absolute certainty, that they are in the hands of Allah alone.
So, before that moment arrives, turn to your Creator. He who gives life and takes it is the same One who will raise you from your grave. He who is able to take your soul is able to bring it back. Do not wait until the soul reaches your throat to believe—for then, belief will not benefit you. Embrace faith now, live in obedience to Allah, and prepare for the meeting with Him. For the One who holds your soul in His hands is the Most Merciful, the Most Just, and His promise of Resurrection is true. Let this verse awaken your heart and draw you closer to the truth before the final breath arrives.
