Word Meanings:
- يُشْرِكُونَ (yushrikūn): They associate partners (with Allah in worship).
- مَا لَا يَخْلُقُ شَيْئًا (mā lā yakhluqu shay’an): That which cannot create anything at all.
- وَهُمْ يُخْلَقُونَ (wa hum yukhlaqūn): While they themselves are created (i.e., they are beings that are brought into existence by Allah).
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse poses a profound rhetorical question to those who associate partners with Allah in worship. It challenges their logic and reasoning: How can you, O idolaters, take as objects of worship things that are utterly incapable of creating even the smallest particle in this universe? These idols, statues, or even beings like Satan—whom some misguided people venerate—are themselves created. They are brought into existence by Allah alone, the Creator of all things. They possess no power to create, no ability to sustain, and no authority over life or death. Yet, you bow to them, seek their help, and offer them acts of worship that belong exclusively to Allah.
The question is not merely informational; it is a powerful indictment of the absurdity of shirk (associating partners with Allah). If these beings cannot create anything—not even a fly, not even a seed—then how can they deserve your devotion? The One who deserves worship is the One who creates, sustains, and governs all affairs. Worship is the ultimate act of humility and love, and it must be directed only to the One who is truly worthy of it.
This verse also carries a deep spiritual lesson for every believer. It reminds us to reflect on the nature of true divinity. Anything that is created—no matter how great, powerful, or revered it may appear—is inherently dependent on Allah. It has no independent existence, no self-sustaining power, and no ability to benefit or harm except by Allah’s will. Therefore, directing any form of worship, supplication, or ultimate trust to such beings is not only irrational but also a grave injustice to one’s own soul.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart and mind. Look around you—at the heavens, the earth, the mountains, the oceans, and your own self. Everything you see is a creation, bearing the fingerprints of its Maker. The One who created all of this, who gave you life, who sustains you every moment, and who will one day call you back to Him—that is the only One worthy of your worship. Do not waste your devotion on things that can neither create nor provide for you. Turn your heart to Allah, the Creator of all, and you will find peace, purpose, and true success. He is the One who hears your prayers, answers your calls, and forgives your sins. So worship Him alone, and you will taste the sweetness of faith that no idol or false deity can ever offer.
